The LGBT City of Love
No, not Paris, but Stockholm! I recently had the opportunity to enjoy a very romantic getaway to Stockholm – a city known as one of the most welcoming destination for the LGBT+ community. I always love exploring new destinations, but this trip was extra special. Stockholm has everything you will need for the perfect romantic getaway, and it left no doubt in my mind that Stockholm is the LGBT City of Love.
A Little History
This year, Stockholm – the capital and largest city in Sweden, is celebrating 75 years since the decriminalization of homosexuality, and 10 years of equal marriage, which puts them ahead of so many cities that are just now opening hearts… and minds, to our community.
Tip: There is no need to look for gay neighbourhoods or gay district in Stockholm. Everything is integrated.
Our Visit
Where to Stay
We had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Diplomat Stockholm. Located in the heart of the city, this luxury hotel by the water is stylish and elegant. With a name like that, you have to wonder about the history, right? Well, the location used to house diplomats before it was converted to a hotel! The Hotel Diplomat is also conveniently located only steps away from shopping, restaurants, and local bars.
Places to Go and Things to See
During our visit, we got to visit museums, the palace, local restaurants, and we even got to meet up with our friends from Once Upon A Journey. Here are some of the highlights from our trip!
Stockholm Royal Palace – Open year round, this historic destination is a must see. Admission to The Royal Palace includes The Royal Apartments, The Treasury, The Tre Kronor Museum and Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities. We can’t mention the Stockholm Royal Palace without bringing up Queen Kristina. Raised as a prince, she never settled into an identity; in fact, she used the titles of king and queen. She was known for breaking gender roles from a young age until the day she died.
Vasa Museum – Built in early 1600s, this stunning museum is the home to the royal flagship Vasa and to the world’s only intact 17thCentury royal warship. Guided Tours are available.
ABBA the museum – At ABBA the Museum, you can be part of the success story of one of the world’s most successful pop groups. Get up on the stage with ABBA, sing karaoke, and more. Make sure you arrive early to beat the crowd. It gets super busy!
Berns Asiatiska – This ultimate romantic dining location has been open since 1863. Guests of this legendary Asian restaurant located at the Berns Hotel, dine under beautiful crystal chandeliers, surrounded by amazing architecture.
Secret Garden – This charming restaurant and bar is a leading LGBT+ venue and the perfect place to end the night with drinking and dancing.
Quick Tips
– The best way to get into the city from the airport is by taking the Arlanda Express. It only takes 20 minutes and brings you right into the city center of Stockholm.
– We quickly learned that Stockholmers are trendy people when it comes to fashion. If your itinerary and budget allows, pack the basics, and shop for clothes and accessories once you arrive. That is always fun, especially when visiting another country. Just remember to bring an extra suitcase, or plan to buy one for all the extra goodies you purchase.
– Taxis are not regulated, so make sure you check for prices, or ask the hotel or locals for advice.
– Make sure you visit the subway stations as they are all covered with art! Each station is different. Very instagrammable. Stadion station features a giant rainbow.
