Foodie Travel: Top 5 Hidden Gems in Virginia Beach

May 17, 2021 | Food Blog

As a top vacation destination, especially during the summer, Virginia Beach is packed with things to do and a variety of restaurants offering just about every type of cuisine imaginable. As a tourist, you can easily find many of those places right at the beach, but Virginia Beach also has quite a few hidden gems that are a foodie’s paradise. Most of them are outside of touristy areas, which makes it even better. Here are the top 5 hidden gems in Virginia Beach that locals love, and tourists must add to their list!

The Route 58 Delicatessen

4000 Virginia Beach Blvd – Virginia Beach, VA

“If you finish, we made a mistake” – The quote used by this New York Style deli couldn’t be more accurate. They give sizeable portions a whole new meaning. In fact, if you love desserts, you should probably start with that because you won’t be able to eat it right after your meal. They do have some of the best cheesecakes, too! The Route 58 is best known for their Reuben sandwich, which has been named #1 best Reuben quite a few times. Their staff is always super friendly.

The Royal Chocolate

164 Central Park Avenue – Virginia Beach, VA

Located in Town Center, The Royal Chocolate is a paradise for chocolate lovers! From truffles to gourmet apples to fondue, everything is amazing. I definitely recommend trying the frozen hot white chocolate, which I’m now craving just thinking about it. Their staff is always amazing.

Bro’s Fish Tacos

277 N Lynnhaven Rd Suite 116 – Virginia Beach, VA

The husband and wife owned business started out as a food truck. I literally used to stalk their social media for the truck’s schedule because they are that good! They now have a brick-and-mortar location, and their food is just as delicious as always. I basically would have to recommend everything on their menu. lol

Mission’s BBQ

116 S Independence Boulevard – Virginia Beach, VA

This Virginia chain restaurant serves authentic BBQ, and it is on my top 3 list of the best. Not only are the food and service great, but they also give back to the community by donating to national and local charitable organizations.

Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue

1919 Monticello Avenue – Norfolk, VA

Although not in Virginia Beach, it is close enough and definitely worth the mention. This landmark diner has been around since 1904, serving BBQ, burgers, hot dogs, and more. Doumar’s Barbecue is known for inventing the world’s first waffle cone. The world’s first cone machine is still used today and it makes the best cones!
